Want

To explore the possibility of identifying and shaping what may be the space between presence and absence. The why of what we lack is a constant presence in our existence.

This investigative process begins with a (self)analysis of racialised reality in urban art territories – primarily in the West, where the presence of Black individuals is still insufficient. The presence of Black souls in the development of Western civilisation, however, whether in the pursuit of well-being in the northern axis or in the construction of city wealth, is greatly elevated. A process of self-reflection stemming from mourning is what leads to the deepening of this investigation.

When one loses a love, the absence of the one who has gone becomes a massive presence, and the differentiation between these two feelings blurs completely. Such a void extends to objects, desires, places, and memories. In short, everything that is not there but occupies space in time. There is a moment, however, when these two states (presence and absence) intersect. This is where the interest of this investigation solidifies.

The tool used for this experiment is an action: static running without leaving one’s place and axis. It is an active meditation of exhaustion present in the work from the moment the first audience member enters until the last person leaves the space. The indirect action transforms into a direct one, as it has the potential to run things, feelings, sounds, texts, scents, and memories. The invisible, thoughts, different states.

The choice of a static and simple action is made to contrast with everyday reality. When we pick up our phones, much of the content on social media is filled with repetitive information. In WANT, the proposal is to decompress time and seek the emancipation of the audience’s subjectivity through simple actions.

For the costume, the element is fire: long pants and a shirt, everyday pieces in a reddish-orange tone that serves as a thermometer and a kind of organic chronometer, indicating exhaustion, time, and the high temperature resulting from the action as sweat stains the shirt.
